Victoria was working as a Biochemist when a car accident left her with severe whiplash. This was complicated by a history of parachuting, playing front-row rugby, long-distance cycling and horse riding! Osteopathic treatment and advice helped her to recover, and in the process she fell in love with the philosophy of osteopathy.
She enrolled on the five-year degree course at the London School of Osteopathy, graduating in 2005. She has been working at East Barnwell since October 2005 and in July 2006 took the osteopathic practice over from Gaye Dixon.
In May 2008, Victoria opened the Saturday clinic at the Bodywise Studio (formerly Cambridge Bodywork Pilates Studio) on Gwydir Street.
The centre offers a peaceful and relaxing environment, conveniently close to the city centre.
Victoria is passionate about the scope of osteopathy, and firmly believes that it can help most problems – from low back pain to symptoms of the common cold.
“Once you understand how intrinsic the musculoskeletal system is to your overall health, from driving circulation to providing balance to helping deal with infection, Osteopathy just makes sense”.
Victoria intuitively understands that the body has it’s own healing mechanisms that can deal with most challenges, given the right conditions. She sees her role as enabling the patient’s body to heal itself by removing the physical restrictions to health.
Although she enjoys all aspects of her work, Victoria has a special interest in helping elderly patients to improve their quality of life by working on balance and mobility, and recovery from falls; and helping younger patients to understand their bodies better, improving current function and preventing future problems arising.
Steven Goddard started his training as an Osteopath in 2000, graduating from The British College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004.
He spent his first post-graduate year in Cardiff before moving to Cambridge in April 2006.
“Anyone who has experienced osteopathy will know that each osteopath has an individual approach to treatment, honed and developed through practise and experience.
During my time in practice I have found it helpful to consider the human body as a complex machine, which we tend to neglect until it shows signs of disrepair. Generally speaking, the more care we take of this machine, the better it performs and the longer it will function smoothly.
Pain is the symptom of dysfunction that generally drives people to seek advice from an osteopath. My approach is to treat these symptoms but also to analyse the cause of the problem and work with the patient towards preventing its occurrence.
We don't think twice about servicing our car every year, but will go for years without ever thinking about our own body which will of course breakdown eventually if never cared for."
