What can be treated by Acupuncture?

In 1979, the World Health Organisation formally recognised Acupuncture, stating that it felt it provided suitable treatment for a range of problems. In 2000, the British Medical Association supported these views.
Conditions that respond well to treatment include:
    Nervous System Disorders
  • Headaches
  • Migraine
  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
    Allergies
  • Asthma and Eczema
  • Hayfever/ Rhinitis
  • Cats, dogs, house dust allergies
    Stress/Emotional Disorders
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Anxiety
  • Palpitations
  • Ulcers
  • Diarrhoea and constipation
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Exam nerves
    Muscular and Skeletal Disorders
  • Low back pain / chronic pain management
  • Sciatica
  • Frozen Shoulder, Tennis / Golfers Elbow
  • Osteoarthritis
    Gynaecological Problems
  • Menstrual disorders/pain
  • Pre-menstrual tension/mood swings
  • Menopausal symptoms

Whilst many of these conditions respond well to Acupuncture, this is not an exhaustive list. Furthermore, treatment need not be in isolation. It can work alongside existing treatment by other health professionals.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a Chinese Medical system that has developed over 3000 years. It works on the principle of stimulating and regulating the flow of energy, or “Qi”, in the body. This in turn can influence hormones, the nervous system, tissues and organs. When Qi flows well, there is health and vitality. When this flow is disrupted, illness can follow.

A variety of techniques are used to redress any disruption, the most common treatment being the insertion of very thin needles that induce a gentle, dull ache. This signifies a connection with the body’s Qi.
Advice on lifestyle and dietary changes may also be given to support this action and so involve the patient in her/his own recovery and maintenance of health.

How often will I need treatment?

Treatment is rarely a one-off, although a single treatment can often give relief to acute problems. More importantly, please remember that you are in control. The decision over how many sessions you need will be a joint agreement between you and your Acupuncturist and of course, you are free to ask as many questions as you feel necessary.

More often than not, treatment will be on a weekly basis. It takes place in complete privacy, with a commitment to confidentiality.
Treatments will usually last for forty five minutes.
